Physical properties

Bentonite is an hydrated natural clay mineral dominated by montmorillonite. Bentonite is mainly white, cream-colored, light gray, yellowish green, black, variegated, etc, it is mostly dense and hard, a little earthy, and it has strong swelling power. Outcrop or foamy on the outcrop; oil sheen, waxy sheen or earthy sheen, opaque. Hardness 2.0 ~ 2.5; Specific gravity 2.0 ~ 2.7; Melting point 1330 ~ 1430 °C.

Bentonite has the properties of water swelling, adhesion, adsorption, lubricity, catalytic activity, thixotropy, plasticity and cation exchange properties. According to montmorillonite layer exchangeable cationic species, content and crystallization chemistry, bentonite can be divided into sodium, calcium, magnesium and calcium-sodium bentonite and other different types.

Development and application

Bentonite has good physical and chemical properties. It enjoys the reputation of “universal clay” internationally. It is mainly used for foundry sand, drilling mud, iron ore pellets, civil engineering works, animal and poultry feed etc. Also as binders, thixotropic agents, suspending agents, stabilizers, fillers, catalysts, etc are widely used in the fields of agriculture, light industry, cosmetics, casting and natural mineral materials etc.
